The Cat: Every Appearance and How to Handle It

The cat is the reason A Little to the Left feels alive. It swats your neat stacks, walks across your keyboard, hides in drawers and sometimes simply wants attention. This guide lists every kind of cat appearance in the base game and both expansions, explains how to handle each one and covers all achievements connected to the cat.

Five ways the cat shows up

Type What happens What to do
The paw A paw reaches in to grab or push an object Click the paw to shoo it away
Scripted chaos The cat ruins a finished puzzle once Rebuild; this cannot be prevented
Interference It walks across a device or leaves prints Close pop-ups, keep cleaning
Cat breaks A level where the cat just wants petting Pet it, or wait
Cat as the puzzle Petting in rhythm, finding hidden cats Follow the level’s own rule

The cat never makes a level unsolvable. When it moves something, the level waits for you to fix it.

Cat moments in the base game

  • Level 2: a basket of cat toys. One is a ball inside a ball; shaking it unlocks Fun for Humans Too.
  • Level 9: the first paw. Click it before it grabs a stamp for Bad Kitty.
  • Level 31: the table setting. The first disruption is scripted; after you rebuild, stop the paw before it reaches the table for Keep Away.
  • Level 36: the fridge photos tell the cat’s own story of mischief.
  • Level 53: the vase the cat knocked over, which you rebuild.
  • Level 54: three scenes of paw prints, a coffee spill and broken leaves. Clean everything for Path of Destruction.
  • Level 72: the cat walks over the laptop and triggers error windows; close them and continue.
  • Finale: pet the cat in rhythm with the pulsing circle, then build a Tupperware tower for it to climb to the top.
  • Credits: you play as the cat and swat the names. Hit every name and job title for Be The Chaos.

Cats in the expansions

Cupboards & Drawers

Four levels are cat breaks: the cat in the sink, on the shelf, in the bowl and one more near the end. They contain no puzzle. Level 13, the cat on the shelf, holds In No Rush: leave the level open and sit with the cat for a few minutes.

Seeing Stars

The second expansion has several cats instead of one. They show up around the window level, Level 26 asks you to shake toys until every cat pays attention, the main finale has the cat stealing and breaking the star you are trying to place, and the last bonus level is a search for nine cats hidden around the house: in the laundry, shopping bags, jars, books, behind a portrait and a lampshade, in yarn and in an umbrella.

Handling the paw: practical tips

  • Finish the risky part first. The paw tends to target loose, unfinished items. Lock in the objects that are hardest to place before tidying the easy ones.
  • Do not chase it. If the paw already grabbed something, let it go and put the object back afterwards. Dragging against the paw wastes time.
  • Watch the edges. The paw enters from outside the scene. Keeping the cursor between your work and the screen edge shortens your reaction time.
  • Scripted moments are not your fault. In Level 31 the first wreck always happens. Rebuild calmly; the second attempt is the one you can defend.

Cat FAQ

Can the cat make me fail a level? No. There is no failure state. Anything the cat moves can be put back.

Do I have to pet the cat in break levels? Petting moves you on quickly, but the cat breaks have no wrong answer. One of them even rewards you for doing nothing.

Is it always the same cat? The base game and Cupboards & Drawers star one cat. Seeing Stars adds more cats, which is why its last bonus level is a hunt for all of them.
