The games

Unpacking

Developer and year: Witch Beam, 2021

The closest relative. You unpack boxes in a series of homes over many years of one person’s life and decide where each belonging goes. Like A Little to the Left, it tells its story only through objects and has no fail state. It is a little freer: most items can go anywhere sensible, and only a few have to be in a specific place.

Assemble with Care

Developer and year: ustwo games, 2019

You play an antique restorer who repairs cherished objects: radios, cameras, toys. Each repair is a short hands-on puzzle of unscrewing, cleaning and reassembling, wrapped in a gentle story about the people who own them. If the drawer and toolbox levels were your favourites, this is a natural next step.

Storyteller

Developer and year: Daniel Benmergui, 2023

Each puzzle gives you a title such as a betrayal or a love story and a few comic panels. You fill the panels with characters and scenes until the story matches. Puzzles are short, accept several solutions and reward the same kind of lateral thinking that the third star of a Seeing Stars level needs.

Behind the Frame: The Finest Scenery

Developer and year: Silver Lining Studio, 2021

A short, hand-painted puzzle adventure about an aspiring painter and the neighbour she watches across the street. Most puzzles are small object riddles in a tiny apartment: find the missing paint, open the box, read the clue in the scene. It suits players who liked levels such as the mirror or the laptop desk.

Hidden Folks

Developer and year: Adriaan de Jongh and Sylvain Tegroeg, 2017

A hand-drawn hidden object game where you search large black-and-white scenes for characters and items, with touch-responsive details and sound effects made by voice. It trains the same attention to small details that A Little to the Left asks for when you count holes, stripes or bumps.

Townscaper

Developer and year: Oskar Stålberg, 2020

Click on the water and a colourful island town grows, with houses, arches and stairs forming themselves around your choices. There are no goals or scores at all. It shares A Little to the Left’s gentle sound design and the simple pleasure of placing something and watching it settle into place.

Tiny Glade

Developer and year: Pounce Light, 2024

A diorama builder where you draw walls, paths and towers and the game shapes them into charming castles and villages. Like Townscaper it has no objectives, but its tactile, forgiving tools feel close to straightening frames and arranging shelves in A Little to the Left.

Mineko’s Night Market

Developer and year: Meowza Games, 2023

A cosy life sim set on a Japanese-inspired island full of cats. You gather, craft and run a stall at the weekly night market. It is longer and busier than A Little to the Left, but the warm art and the cats make it a good choice when you want a cosy world rather than pure puzzles.

Wobbledogs

Developer and year: Animal Uprising, 2022

A pet simulator where you raise physics-driven dogs that wobble, tumble and mutate based on what they eat. It has no puzzles in the usual sense, but it captures the playful, slightly chaotic charm of the cat in A Little to the Left.

Dave the Diver

Developer and year: Mintrocket, 2023

Dive for fish by day and run a sushi restaurant by night. It is the most demanding game on this list, with action and management, but its loops of collecting, sorting and serving are deeply satisfying and its humour is just as warm.
